The filter system is a server-side thing given they've explained the filter database is purged from time to time or else it overloads the server when it gets too complex.

Most likely all they've done is take the usual stream of conversation data and split it in two. One copy goes through the filter before going out to the flash client, the other bypasses the filter and goes directly to client. You simply get to choose which one is sent to your computer. So Mods and the automated systems would still know the filter was activated even if you don't personally see it any more.

It doesn't matter. Wether you have the filter on or off, the chat gets filtered anyways and sent to two different chat channels. One of the channels filters things to 'bobba', the other doesn't. Your filter settings simply decide what chat channel you listen to, so using 'fuck' will lag the servers just like it would before, even if you have your filter off.
