tl;dr: They've come up with a new type of Flash memory that doesn't start sucking when you use it more than a few times. _________________ Nigrapedia

Current flash based cards and harddrives can't be written to a single memory unit more than something like 100 thousand times before they start failing. So if you actually use your hard drive, it's gonna be toast after a while.
This new flash is smaller, uses less energy, and be be written to something like 100 million times, if not more. Not sure about write speed though. Basically, a giant leap in technology. _________________

More so because unless you have a high-end SSD, most flash is moar like a few hundred or a few thousand writes (at best) in the real world.
Right now flash is good for stuff like ROM/BIOS, digital cameras, some laptops, etc. It's far from a hard-drive killer like everyone has been saying for the last decade or so. At the normal consumer level it can't match the capacity of the current 1TB+ hard drives or the speed of 15k RPM hard drives, both of which are vastly cheaper than their equivalents in flash-based media.
It may beat out magentic media some day (assuming a new technology doesn't kill them both) but don't expect it to happen for a number of years. _________________ Nigrapedia

Oddly enough, we may be starting to get to the point where new technology is being discovered faster than the previous recently discovered tech can be established as far as business and industry goes.
Leads to the problem of choosing to invest in an almost new but already "obsolete" tech, or waiting for the new thing on the horizon that will be obsolete just as fast. Doesn't matter too much for medium to large companies, but can be a bitch for small business with little capital. _________________

That's where you start looking at whether you really need the new technology or can wait for a while and upgrade later on.
Remember that the market isn't likely to take well to constantly changing standards. Certain technologies will probably become popular for whatever reason and be dominant for a while the way things happen now. Of course it will also sometimes not make much sense technically, as in the case of Zip drives. _________________ Nigrapedia
